The speakers at the meeting of Kendal Rotary on 22nd July were Andy Carter and Val Ayres from the Rotary Club of Cockermouth who gave a presentation on ‘The Cockermouth Conferences’. The 2019 Conference was run by Cockermouth Rotary Club in partnership with ‘Churches Together’ and the topic discussed was ‘Countering Domestic Abuse and Modern Day Slavery’, which involved all the relevant agencies. Domestic abuse is one of the most common crimes committed and is largely hidden under the radar and is rarely reported to the police. The club are keen to have similar conferences throughout the county to raise awareness of the problem and to seek ways to prevent abuse continuing.
At the same meeting, President Peter W D Smith presented Angie Biggs with a Paul Harris Fellowship in recognition of all her work for Youth Activities over many years, and in particular the Youth Speaks Competition which she has organised so well. Now that she is leaving the area, it was felt that she needed the award as an expression of our thanks and hope she will keep visiting us in the future.
