The speaker at the meeting of Kendal Rotary on 15th April was Terry Bond, who gave an illustrated presentation of the History of Lancaster Castle with particular focus on the now closed prison. Having worked there for many years, he had an intimate knowledge of its workings and showed pictures of many parts of the building not generally seen by visitors.
The castle has a long and fascination history and was once owned by John of Gaunt otherwise known as the Duke of Lancaster. Originally a Roman fort and then a Norman castle, it has been enlarged over the years to become the Grade 1 listed building it is today.
Of the many famous inmates of the prison, the ‘Pendle Witches’ and the ‘Birmingham six’ are probably the best known.
