The speaker at the meeting of the Rotary Club of Kendal on 28th October was John Geldard, who gave a talk entitled ‘Food in Agriculture’.
He gave a potted history of his life as a farmer in the South Lakes area, starting with his first farm at ‘Plumgarths’, near Kendal, to his current one near Foulshaw producing beef, sheep and eggs (which are sold in local ASDA stores).
He is currently Chairman of the National Sheep Organisation and highlighted that we are actually producing one third less sheep than we did a decade ago. He stressed that there is an impending food crisis with huge economic and social problems looming unless something is done at Government level to stimulate food production. We need to be producing up to 50% more by 2016.
