The Yards of Kendal

The speakers at the meeting of Kendal Rotary on 2nd October were Patricia Hovey, from Kendal Civic Society and Trevor Hughes, one of its own members. They gave a talk on the yards of Kendal which was a preview of the Society’s latest publication, ‘The Yards of Kendal’ which is being published at the end of October. It is a comprehensive study of the history of the famous yards which are one of the unique features of the town.

Rotary Youth Leadership Award and Rotary in France

Mayflower GeorgeRecently there were two speakers at Kendal Rotary Club on 11th September. The first was Mayflower George who had attended the ‘Rotary Youth Leadership Award’ at Castlesteads outdoor pursuits centre in July.  The course which last for one week is aimed at teaching leadership, life skills and teamwork whilst challenging the students with a number of adventurous activities. She had thoroughly enjoyed the experience, which is funded by Kendal Rotary. 

Ingrid BeatieThe second speaker was Ingrid Beattie, a former member of the club who now lives in France.  She is to be the next President of the ‘Ribérac’ club and she gave a talk about the club itself and its various activities.

DG Larry Branyan

The speaker at the meeting of Kendal Rotary on 21st August was their new Rotary District Governor, Larry Branyan, from The Rotary Club of Carnforth.

He gave a presentation outlining his hopes and aspirations for his year of office and listed the many initiatives he hopes to introduce, not least being the continuation of the Polio Eradication Scheme which has all but eradicated this horrible disease worldwide with only nine cases being reported so far this year.

The Jubilee Sailing Trust Tall Ships

The speaker at the meeting of Kendal Rotary on 14th August was one of our own members, Ken Thwaites, who gave a presentation about his involvement with the Jubilee Sailing Trust tall ships’ Lord Nelson’ and ‘Tenacious’. 

Ken, a qualified Boson’s Mate, has for many years undertaken voyages all around the world and he explained about the intricacies of manning and sailing these three-masted, square rigged ships.

Both ships are adapted to take all types of disabled people and is crewed primarily by volunteers.

Visitors from Zimbabwe

The speaker at Kendal Rotary on 7th August was Philippa Maphosa and her husband Bazibi. 

Philippa is a Rotary member of the Gwera Club in Zimbabwe and she explained about life in her town and of the many projects she and her club are involved with; clean water, education and poverty to name but a few.

She is currently in the UK to try and create a link with the Rotary Club of Dundee with the aim of working together on a specific international project.
