Fred Martin

The speaker at Kendal Rotary on 17th July was one of their own members, Past President Fred Martin, who gave a talk entitled “My Life in Farming”. He gave a very interesting and humorous account of his career in farming in the Lythe valley.

He starting working with his father as a boy when they had only one tractor and eight horses. How things have changed since those days, and he then highlighted the progress made over the decades right up to the present day and how his son has now taken over the business and is continuing the family tradition of farming.

The speaker at the meeting of the Rotary Club of Kendal on 12th June was one of their own members who gave an illustrated talk entitled ‘Cousin Nellie’. Whilst researching his family tree, he came across cousin Nellie and started doing some research into her life.

What a fascinating person she was! Marring an Indian gentleman, she moved to India where both her husband and herself became involved in Indian politics, in particular the Congress Party. Her husband became Mayor of Calcutta and both became very well respected.

The Inner Wheel Singers

The Rotary Club at their meeting of 15th May had a surprise appearance from the Inner Wheel Club Ladies who gave a performance of songs and invited everyone to join in.

The ladies were excellent and in tune but we are not sure if the Rotarians made an improvement to the choir.  Nevertheless, it was fun event and made a change from the usual speaker.  Fortunately we all knew the songs and you can’t beat the old ones!
